Missile Units
Archers and Bombardiers use their missile rating when attacking. These units stand at long range and fire bows, rifles, or in the case of Bombardiers, drop rocks, or burning oil. Like Skirmishers, Light Cavalry, and Spellcasters, these units avoid hand-to-hand combat. Their Melee and Missile ratings are reflective of this. When a Archer or Bombardier unit attacks it can only be attacked in return if the defending unit has a Missile rating. If an Archer unit is attacked then it is forced to the attacker's range of engagement. Bombardiers can only be forced to Melee range by Sky Hunters. Otherwise they may only be attacked by Archers, Siege Engines, or units who have a Missile rating.
Archer units have the ability to aid adjacent, friendly units with defence fire, unless the Archer suffers from the "Broken" morale result. Just after the Missile phase, any Archer unit supporting a defending unit launches a Missile attack at the attacker.
Archers vs. Melee Example: The Archer unit moves to engage at Missile range and uses its Missile rating to inflict damage against the defending Cavalry. The Cavalry is out of range, thus it can't respond.
Archer vs. Skirmisher Example: The Archer unit uses its Missile rating to damage the Skirmisher and since the Skirmisher has no Missile attack it can't respond back.
Archer vs. Archer Example: The Archer unit attacks another Archer unit. Since both units have a Missile rating, damage can occur to both units.
If an Archer unit is attacked by a Melee type unit, then it will be forced to engage in hand-to-hand combat, as are the Skirmisher type units. The Archers fire their bows, and then draw swords when melee occurs.
All Siege Engine units can attack units up to three hexes away; some Siege Engine units can attack up to four hexes away. The pointer changes to a sword when an enemy unit is a valid target.
Siege Engines firing at flyers present a special case, because most Siege Engines can move under any flyer that they can fire at. Movement is the default for Siege Engines at the beginning of their turn; in order to fire before moving, left-click on the Fire button. If the Siege Engine unit has already moved, then left-click on an enemy unit in range and it will attack
